SUMMARY:The Painted Decorations in the Long Gallery at Castletown House
DESCRIPTION:A lecture by Deirdre Cullen on the painted decorations in the Long Gallery at Castletown House. \nDeirdre Cullen was awarded a PhD at University College Dublin in 2026 for her study of the painted decorations in the Long Gallery at Castletown House\, Co. Kildare. Having previously graduated with an MA in Art History at UCD\, while working as a guide and information officer at Castletown she developed a curiosity about the eighteenth-century painted scheme in the Long Gallery\, executed in 1775 and 1776 by the young English artist Charles Reuben Ryley. She returned to UCD to undertake a PhD on this topic. \nHer thesis argues that\, despite the absence of an architect’s steering hand\, the Long Gallery scheme is strongly aligned with the neoclassical painted room genre established in England by the architects James ‘Athenian’ Stuart\, Robert Adam and James Wyatt in the 1760s and 1770s. But the Gallery stands apart in its sheer scale and in the complexity of its iconography\, with hundreds of individual painted images celebrating the history\, mythology\, literature and visual legacy of the ancient world\, created largely under the direction of Lady Louisa Conolly (1743-1821) in an era when women did not typically receive a formal education in the classics. Doors open at 3pm and the talk runs from 3.30pm to 4.30pm \nDeirdre Cullen’s doctoral research was funded by the Irish Research Council in partnership with the Office of Public Works. She was joint awardee of the Irish Georgian Society’s Desmond Guinness Scholarship in 2021 and of the society’s John Maiben Gilmartin Award in 2025. \nThe 2026 talks’ series at Castletown House is dedicated to the memory of the late Jeanne Meldon and is presented by the Office of Public Works (OPW) in association with The Castletown Foundation. \nDoors open at 3pm and the talk runs from 3.30pm to 4.30pm \nwww.castletown.ie

DESCRIPTION:This trio presents the scintillating voice of one of Ireland’s finest Conamara singers\, Róisín Elsafty\, together with the very rare and meltingly beautiful sound of the medieval Irish harp\, played by Ireland’s foremost historical harpist\, Siobhán Armstrong\, woven with the diverse colours of Ronan Browne’s flutes\, whistles and 175-year-old pipes. \nFrom sparkling songs to harp laments and old pipes “pieces”\, we are given a glimpse of the unique sound of early Ireland. Róisín performs evocative unaccompanied songs in the florid Conamara style\, together with achingly beautiful 17th- and 18th-century Irish harpers’ songs with harp and flute accompaniment. \nPlaying a facsimile copy of Ireland’s national emblem – and Europe’s oldest surviving harp\, the medieval Trinity College harp – in the ancient manner\, with fingernails striking brass\, silver and 18-carat gold strings\, Siobhán plays the compositions of the old Irish harper-composers. \nRonan’s low pitch Union pipes\, dating from circa 1850\, have that rich tone which makes you want to curl up and snuggle deep into their rumbling purr as he performs old airs\, marches and jigs. \nThe coming together of these three musical minds with their deep fascination\, love and respect for that past which created our present\, makes for a warm\, informative and joyous evening’s entertainment. \nDoors open at 7pm and the performance runs from 8pm to 9.30pm \nwww.ronanbrownemusic.com \nwww.siobhanarmstrong.com
